A cover is not decoration. It's positioning.
Every design element, the typeface, the image, the negative space, the color temperature, communicates something to the reader before they consciously process it. 'Is this book for someone like me?' 'Does this author know what they're doing?' 'Is this worth ten dollars and four hours of my life?' The cover answers all three. WowPlum designs covers that answer them correctly.
Genre fluency is non-negotiable.
Romance readers have learned to recognize a romance cover. Thriller readers know what psychological tension looks like in type and image. Readers trust genre signals. A cover that breaks those signals, even beautifully, is a cover that loses readers. We study genre conventions the way editors study manuscript trends.
The author's vision matters. The market's expectations matter more.
